Paris Fashion Week: 4 Days
The Labour Party in Manchester for its annual conference is not only the band thought of austerity for the moment. Today, a new law will come into force in China banned government officials from the purchase of luxury goods.
Known as the "rule of economical style of work," said an end to the culture in the country should set gift-giving/bribing endemic. Seem to enforce the rule, police inspectors are trained to identify their products Luxury bling.

And what, you ask, what has this to do with women's fashion show in Paris this weekend?
Vivienne Westwood said the best collection of dresses before signing destroyed dairy shredded knitwear, jewelery and Les Misérables precisely held at the British Embassy, impressed there with a research ambassador Sir Peter Ricketts, pink tie and all "you absorb about the world around you and wear your projection "In other words. Globalization is stupid.
An anti-luxury-politician would probably hit the industry hard. If not, it seems, many homes have expected not only the question, but she directed the move away shots Luxury (logos, glitter, gold) to a very fine, more content filled kind of creativity.
The painting canvas, literally, the form the start of a trend: seemed to be built In fact, the Comme des Garçons, Rei Kawakubo's face with a collection that thrown on the remains of fashion pieces face. They were fed in quasi-ruched ruffles on one shoulder shirts and dresses with fabrics like silk or nylon and other patchwork together, around the arm of a jacket can be combined to be seen here, a puff sleeves, it grouped the neck of a shirt refused to provide a seal form to beat each curve appears that inspiration can be found even to the rejection own seed mode.
Ms. Kawakubo was unfinished and not alone in the search for beauty in the best parts of Yohji Yamamoto is a bit confusing tote a collection (? A sheer sarong pastel chiffon Huh) were edged Edwardian dresses that opened the show, not to mention tatty tweed suits, metal - even though their appearance through the work of these designers who have seen elegance was offset into the unknown.
This strapless sheath dress, pencil skirt, bustier - At the Maison Martin Margiela, for example, the anonymous "team" have their best work yet produced at home with classic feminine shapes with a slight advantage with locking flash on the joint which to control the extent necessary be opened, when a skirt could can show unpacked, the size capris create laterally under a broken tunic pockets to the capacity. He was smart and sexy and sober, and forced in the absence of the usual home of humor, which was a good thing.
Also in Loewe, stopped Stuart Vevers is trying to be cool, and instead deal with the problem season (spring / summer is an obstacle to a home in leather) by questioning the brand craftsmen their skills show through the clothes of an open network of suede strips or created a dress with a black leather woven front panel to allow air in. The marking was at work, and not just to make a name.
This is something that Phoebe Philo has focus at the beginning of his time Céline when she stripped the extras to let the simplicity, and this season was no different, with capri fabric strips brilliant or slouchy with sheeny silk sleeveless tops knotted around around the back to the front in a rotation stitching left behind as a cultivated plant exposed paired. The dresses were mid-calf and a rider back, cut deep Vees forward to. Then broken, Fischer-like networks were filled, and the whole effect was sexier and more carefree than ever
Beyond the logo, desire, emotionally as well as consumption, is caused by suggestion. Haider Ackermann, for example, has always felt remember his clothes - and it is never greed but envy - their trademark, which is perhaps why they seem more relevant.
Participation in the parade waving familiar jackets on slim pants in bright silk, but also casual pajamas and most effective silk dresses with empire waist contrast graphic peas and diamonds, a bust tied braided leather bracelet and pendant smaller filaments, worn over leather leggings beat-up. They were romantic and vaguely medieval and hard as it (cut, necklaces portrait) exotic greenhouse Junya Watanabe sewing athletic, the silk and nylon mesh colors and neon and classic tropes in combination was nice a parade and very refreshing new ideas.
Looking at these dresses and suits almost (OK, body-conscious tops and matching pants), the proposal seems that luxury is defined by carat meaningless. It is a luxury, but surprised and line and movement technology - the values which in turn value their own.

Paris, With a Slouch or a Sashay
New York seems miles away as the Paris collections, the fourth and final stop of the spring 2013 shows, began in a downpour — a literal one, that is. People
arrived at Rochas on Wednesday shaking like poodles, and left to face lagoons of water in the streets. One woman came prepared with a beige vinyl sou’wester
that matched her skirt. I hugged the sidewalk on the Champs-Élysées, staying under the trees, and got back to my hotel just before it let loose again. I opened a
bottle of red wine.
I found the Dries Van Noten show curious but interesting: mostly for its inky colors and plaids, but curious for its runny silhouette. Dare I say grunge? The
attitude was nonchalant in the extreme, with a sleeveless nipped-waist jacket in a silvery plaid worn with a blouse and a sarong-draped skirt in a floral print,
ruffled chiffon tops mixed with plaid, and wrapped jackets and sleeveless dresses tied loosely with a cord. The wrap dresses, particularly one in a black-and-
white plaid with a rolled-sleeve red blouse, looked striking; versatile, too.
Essentially, Mr. Van Noten took the everyday elements of a contemporary wardrobe (the mix of new and old, masculine and feminine, cozy and dressy) and with a
liberal hand, recombined them. There’s quite a feeling of sleepiness in this collection. Or maybe it’s extreme, private comfort.
Could the cause be fashion overload? The ultimate expression was a pair of print pajama pants worn with a blouse and a soupy gray pullover.
At Rochas, Marco Zanini started out on a sporty note, with uniform-like blouses and miniskirts in stiff white brocade. The models, their lips matte red, wore
face-shielding head wraps and soft leather boots like a wrestler’s. But then Mr. Zanini shifted the glamour to satin pencil skirts with snug tops, followed by
hoop skirts. (Yes, swaying hoop skirts.) Mr. Zanini can’t resist that gust of femininity. Each change in the silhouette, from mini to pencil to petticoat to
sexy full-cut bathing suit, meant, ideally, a change in how a woman moves.
England, Australia fashion crushing wins
Left-arm spinner Holly Colvin picked four wickets as England beat Pakistan by 43 runs in the Women's World Twenty20 Group A match in Galle. Colvin struck in her
first over, followed it up with two wickets off consecutive balls in her second and a fourth one in the last over to return with figures of 3.4-0-9-4. Pakistan -
chasing 134 - had crumbled to 50 for 4 by the eleventh over even before the introduction of Colvin. Offspinner Danielle Hazell prised out Pakistan captain Sana
Mir and then broke a 26-run fourth-wicket stand with the scalp of Nain Abidi before the rest of the batting collapsed.
Pakistan's decision to bowl first backfired as England openers brought up a quick century partnership. Although Laura Marsh was run out after scoring 54 off 41
balls in the 14th over, England looked set for a strong total. But the fall of Charlotte Edwards (45) to another run out helped the Pakistan bowlers get a grip
on the innings and they restricted England to 133 for 6.
"We planned to attack the bowling in the Power Play overs," Edwards said. "I think as the game progresses, we've seen spin play a major part, so before the pitch
wore out, we wanted to get as much as possible."
Mir, who was the most successful bowler for Pakistan with 2 for 20, said: "We did really well to restrict them to 133. I thought we could have applied ourselves
better with the bat. Once we lose too many wickets at the start, it just puts immense pressure on the middle-order. Hopefully we will rectify our mistakes and
look to win the remaining two games, we can only go up from here."
Australia chased down the target set by India in the Group A match in Galle with eight wickets in hand to continue the trend of easy wins in the Women's World
T20.
India chose to bat first and despite losing their openers in the fifth and the seventh overs, they were comfortably placed midway in their innings. But India's
captain Mithali Raj was run out on the first ball of the 11th over triggering a collapse. The score turned from 63 for 2 to 73 for 5 in a matter of four overs.
Nagarajan Niranjana (15 off 14 balls) saved India some blushes with a quick 25-run partnership with Mona Meshram taking the team close to the century mark. In
the end, India finished with 104, with Erin Osborne picking up three wickets for 13 runs. Jess Jonassen three-over spell in which she gave away only six runs and
picked up a wicket was also key in slowing India down.
In response, Australia made an aggressive start, putting up 43 runs in six overs by the time their first wicket - Alyssa Healy for 21 - fell. But Jess Cameron
(36 off 32) joined Meg Lanning in a 49-run second-wicket stand in 8.3 overs to bring Australia to the brink of victory. When Lanning was out for 39 to Jhulan
Goswami only 13 runs were required which Australia got without much trouble.
A disappointed Raj later said: "Harman and I were batting really well, but we collapsed once again. One defeat doesn't mean the end of the road, we have to keep
believing in ourselves. We can't sulk about this, surprises do happen."
Erin Osborne, who was declared Player of the Match, said: "I think I was just a beneficiary of some fantastic work done by the other bowlers."

French Atlas Shrugs: Louis Vuitton founder leaking socialism
It is amazing that something Holland has managed to briefly unpopular after he was elected. Arnault was a critic of the regime fee Holland and vote with their feet.

However, the Libération headline yesterday on its front page that says: "Get lost, asshole rich" and Holland in a television interview on the 9th September said it was patriotic to pay taxes.
And it's more patriotic, with the Muslims in your country and bleeding productive citizens, the French lifestyle polygamous Muslim ghettos match funding.
"It would be, what it means to seek another nationality because we are proud to be French have thought," Holland said in the interview 30 minutes.
Significantly. Keep them as members of the Holland company, with dual citizenship in Muslim countries. Nothing says French pride, and not bother to commit to France.
Arnault has continued the debate yesterday with the announcement that he continues to solve its "vulgarity" and "violence" and made having regard to the work in France since the 1980s, has extended when he took over the control of LVMH.
But I am sure that all taxes will not help pay Holland to create more jobs. Patriotic rape jobs in the suburbs.
Opposition politicians said Arnault case, to be the beginning of an exodus and the start of the country's wealth.
"Behind Bernard Arnault case there is a mountain of runs," former Prime Minister Francois Fillon said yesterday on Europe 1, adding: "Who is the patriot, someone who has created thousands of jobs and pay" millions of dollars in taxes or " columnist? "
Columnists ... Of course.
Besides, who needs anyway Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy. It's not like these products to earn money. Belgium and France can work social workers can not teach Muslims to kill their sisters when they really have to do.
The President needs to reconsider its position. It can learn about the growth and job creation Arnault, who has spent the past 25 years, its luxury goods company, in France the most important and profitable. It is now more than 5 percent of the Paris Stock Exchange and employs about 100,000 people in France and around the world. It should not be against him on the way he earned a net worth of $ 25700000000 will be held, according to Bloomberg billionaires, making him the 15th richest on the planet.
France loses billions and win .... Million.
Holland admitted that the rate of 75 percent on income over $ 1 million largely symbolic: it only affects people from 2000 to 3000 and will not increase much revenue. This gives credibility Arnault and other allegations that the levy designed to inflate approval ratings of President falls stoking class resentment.
But the left is not really interested in wealth, and in its destruction. Chase 75 percent reached the target purge France of some of his upper-class dissidents. Holland Arnault wants to go, and got his wish.
"Mr. Arnault came to see me at the end of last year will be based here, live here," said Mayor Armand de Decker told the newspaper La Libre Belgique. "He feels about his country's political, as he. Hostile to the society"
Arnault has opened the way to Monte Carlo, asked the French press. The road to Monaco via Belgium marked a well, once he had dual citizenship, the businessman could dispense theoretically move his French citizenship and to the Riviera principality where nationals Belgian - but not French citizenship - can live tax-free.

Chanel Fined 200,000 euros in Counterfeiting Case

Michigan Fashion Week (MFW) debuted to a crowded room of excited attendees, this past Saturday night, at the Southfield Civic Center. Fourteen designers
showcased their collections on the runway in the first-time fashion event. The list of designers to present showcases include: Siana Treece, Taylor Tankson,

points stressed about MFW was that it was one of the few fashion events that allowed designers to showcase their collections for free to the public.
Many different groups and forms of media provided their sponsorship to the event. The online artist network, Access4Artists, was among the most visible sponsors
at the event. After a few brief introductions and a lively performance by girl group, Lois Lane, the designer showcases began.
Before each runway presentation, each designer shared his or her fashion background and the inspiration for behind his or her collection. Crystal White described
her collection as “sexy, office chic” while designer Siana Treece described her collection as “secret garden” inspired.
Each designer brought a young and unique perspective to the collection they created. From Terry-Ann Phillips’ colorful and feminine collection to the urban,
casual vibe of Johhny Bomber’s clothing, there was a variety of fashion flavor to see.
Perhaps, the most impressive part of MFW was that many designers had only been designing for a few years yet were able to put together collections to present for
one of their biggest or first professional fashion events.
The models also brought their own style and personality to their struts down the runway. Overall, MFW drew a large crowd for its first year and gave upcoming
local designers an opportunity to step further into the fashion industry.
MFW came together in an organized fashion event in its first year and displayed a promise for more development as it progresses into the future. Like all local
fashion events, it will be the public’s embrace and the participation of local fashion talent that will determine the future success of MFW.

Harlem’s Fashion Row Celebrated Five Years at New York Fashion Week
DURING the recent spring shows in New York, a handful of New York designers and brands celebrated anniversaries. Harlem’s Fashion Row was among them.
The concept behind Harlem’s Fashion Row is simple enough. Brandice Henderson, its founder, was attending a fashion show in Brooklyn and thought her own
neighborhood, Harlem, deserved a showcase as well. She introduced Harlem’s Fashion Row in 2007 with a small show staffed by 15 volunteers.
Five years later, Harlem’s Fashion Row became the primary collective platform for designers of color during New York Fashion Week, enabling emerging artists to
showcase their talent among industry heavyweights, including top buyers, editors and bloggers.
Its Sept. 7 show at Lincoln Center drew such notables as Natalie Cole, Vanessa Williams and Nicole Murphy (Eddie Murphy’s former wife), who walked the runway
wearing a design by Omar Salam. Fashion insiders like Corynne Corbett, Essence magazine’s beauty director; Julee Wilson, the Huffington Post style editor; and
Fern Mallis, former executive director of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, sat front row.
More than 300 people attended the presentation, which featured five designers. Nzinga Knight, inspired by a recent trip to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, showed
embellished pieces, including a blush gown with hand-embroidered mirror detail. Mr. Salam’s spring 2013 collection for Sukeina was marked by voluminous shapes
like a billowing silk organza tulip jacket worn over a lace dress. For her Ashtyn line, Latisha Daring sent kimono-sleeve jackets and tribal-printed skirts down
the runway. Joseph Bethune showed structured separates in camouflage and denim for the brand Bethune Brothers. Kevan Hall introduced a collection of crepe
sheaths, peplum dresses, petal skirts and gowns covered in tiered palettes.
But the show isn’t merely about clothes. The organization’s primary purpose is to push designers forward in the fashion business. “I hope that through H.F.R.
we create a company that acts as a bridge for designers of color to get into fashion,” Ms. Henderson said of Harlem’s Fashion Row.
The company grooms its designers, who were selected by a panel of judges in June. Applicants were asked to show pieces from past collections, explain their
business strategy, present their spring 2013 sketches and explain why they wanted to be a part of Harlem’s Fashion Row. Scores were tallied, and the five
highest-ranked designers were selected.
Once chosen, designers are given the opportunity to consult with leaders in the business. Ms. Mallis met with them throughout the selection process, and the
designer Stephen Burrows critiqued each piece of the designers’ collections, Ms. Henderson said.
Ms. Henderson, who has more than a decade of retail-buying and fashion-production experience, is optimistic about the future of Harlem’s Fashion Row. “We are
planning to launch an H.F.R. label in 2014 with a small capsule collection of products available on our Web site,” she said. “We are hoping that we can not
only show the designers’ collections, but also produce and market it for them. When this happens, everything changes.”

Fashion designers return to elegance in buzzy London
The designers at London Fashion Week announced a return to the feminine elegance for Spring / Summer 2013 with flowers, hems and more cuts, a custom look to create modest subtle sexuality.
Outweigh a slowdown in the global economy continues on the fashion industry and luxury London designers were sharp statement pieces that buyers want to invest, based on Mark timeless silhouettes of the 1950s, as seen in Temperley London label, Emilia Wickstead and Vivienne Westwood Red.
"London still feels creative and always so exciting about buzzy energy, but the collections were full of very wearable, luxurious rooms," Pat McNulty, web editor of Cosmopolitan UK, told Reuters in an e-mail, quoting Collections Giles, Burberry Prorsum, Mulberry and Erdem among his favorites.
Floral rich culture of the English landscape is a central theme of this season, as designers incorporate vibrant flowers and floral colors in their palettes.
Floral ornate garments Erdem, Mulberry, Bora Aksu, Temperley London and Corrie Nielsen, who was inspired by botanical gardens and Makoto Murayama Japanese artist.
Designer favored lighter materials for their creations spring, with a mix of organza, cotton, silk and chiffon, but added. An edge with sexy tops and short hemline with Felder Felder, peek-a-boo cutouts at Erdem and leather Mulberry
Fantasy and flair FUTURISTIC
While designers have embraced a more mature look for their clothes, there was still a presence of quirky style that is so unique from London Fashion.
Models Osman shattered the hearts embroidered dresses and separates decorated with sharp edges in bold shades of pink, blue, yellow, black and white.
Vivienne Westwood, the queen of fashion eccentric, gave a home Vamped-up to 1950's Red Label, with models walking the runway in the faces painted floral headdress and compensation for their feminine dresses and costumes.
In addition, the arches rabies Meadham Kirchoff and garden gnomes have littered the entrance to Mulberry.
"It's a liking to her, I think the freshness, I think of England, it is very very young, but mature at the same time feels" the actress Gillian Anderson told Reuters backstage at the Mulberry show Tuesday.
A closer look futuristic Christopher Kane candy-colored dresses found nuts and bolts that hold the Plexiglas draping set, plastic and tape ruffle details.
"Christopher Kane is so inventive in every season nothing like new and feels all that he has never done before," Sarah Harris, editor of British Vogue features fashion, told Reuters, adding that the collection was "so smart."
Shiny metal added a futuristic touch feminine silhouettes in Burberry Prorsum, where models in the saturated silver metal layers with a twist on the classic Burberry trench coat, pink fuschia, cobalt blue, gold and bronze strutted a rainbow palette to create the track.
Jonathan Saunders turned on a ride with simple separates tissue metallic pencil skirts and dresses custom, while Holly Fulton just. A nasty edge with pastel-colored clothes made of PVC flower
Although flowers were a dominant theme in the collections, some designers went through to modern graphics. Paul Smith worked seen geometric block prints in a structured separation, with darker shades of red, yellow and green, even in Roksanda Ilincic, where Mondrian-esque colors were incorporated into the boldly curved blocks on clothes quarter.
Aztec and Maya were printed taken in the middle of the fabulous collection Fyodor Golan, Matthew Williamson in a palette of blues and reds, while Peter Pilotto has tribal designs to a new level, making optical illusions with their impressions monochrome separates and rock layers dresses.

Daily Dispatches: Day 1
About midday, after the Kimberly Ovitz runway show, Phil Oh, the street style photographer behind the blog StreetPeeper.com, stood out
in a cheerful turquoise and green turtle-print polo shirt by Michael Bastian. He seemed to embody Fashion Week wisdom. Slow and steady
wins the race?
Wishful thinking.
“Adderall,” said Mr. Oh, before snapping a few shots of editors crossing the West Side Highway. “That’s how I survive fashion
month.”
New York Fashion Week officially kicked off on Thursday, and nerves were already jangled, schedules strung tight.
That morning, the Olympic gold medalist Sanya Richards-Ross was backstage at the BCBG Max Azria show in Lincoln Center, waiting, like
everybody else, for her seat. Ms. Richards-Ross, who landed at 5 a.m. from Los Angeles, wore a daring, see-through top with a wide
center strip. “It helps to have an athletic figure,” she said. That, and the couple of gold medals she brought came in handy. “They
go with everything,” she added, laughing. When she finally took her seat, a chorus of popping flashbulbs greeted her.
Even more popular for the cameramen was the reality star Whitney Port. The photographers lingered so long that a woman in the sixth row
commented, loudly, “C’mon, she’s not that exciting.”
By comparison, the atmosphere was civil at Richard Chai Love show, which took place immediately after. This was the first fashion show
for Russell Westbrook, a guard for the Oklahoma City Thunder, and he looked the part, in his black-and-red suede sneakers and wire-
rimmed eyeglasses. “Sometimes, the N.B.A. feels like fashion week,” he said, of his stylish basketball cohorts. His front-row
seatmate, Nick Cannon, wore a brown baseball cap backward.
Downtown at Milk Studios, all eyes were on the Creatures of the Wind show. Sure, there were stars, but more of the industry kind. Then,
it was across the highway to Ms. Ovitz’s show at Pier 57, where her father, the Hollywood power player Michael Ovitz, was backstage,
while his girlfriend, Tamara Mellon, sat front row, stilettos crossed.
Into the afternoon, the schedule seemed to splinter. Some headed to men’s shows, while others to smaller presentations. And there was
Fashion’s Night Out to reserve energy for. Somewhere, in the afternoon lull, it seemed Mr. Oh was wise after all.
Celebrity Fashion Designers at Fashion Week
When it comes to Hollywood these days, it’s commonplace to build an empire with one’s celebrity—and some actors, musicians, and even
one or two socialites-turned-reality stars have made impressive forays into the world of fashion.
With New York Fashion Week 2012 now upon us, Biography.com picked out several sartorial-minded celebs who are either alumni or newbies
to this semi-annual soiree.
So slip on those shades, purse your lips, and get ready for the catwalk to be celebrified. It’s lights, cameras, A-list fashion!
fashion! fashion!
Before she met her now ex-hubby Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes’ style would’ve been more likened to Abercrombie & Fitch—if anything. But
once she got involved with Cruise (and his PR machine…ahem), the Girl Next Door suddenly started donning looks that were trendsetting
and chic.
In 2008 Katie teamed up with stylist Jeanne Yang and announced the launch of her new fashion line, Holmes & Yang—a collection of
versatile, day-to-night ready-to-wear pieces, which will be featured for the first time at New York Fashion Week on September 9.
The same day that Holmes & Yang will be strutting its stuff down the runway at Fall Fashion Week, Victoria Beckham’s line will be
vying for its time in the spotlight.
The British fashion queen (and eternal scowler) is famous for her body-hugging, made-for-skinny-gals silhouettes, but recently, she’s
created a collection that's given way to refined looser fits. Since she’s not pregnant anymore, we’ll see if the BFA-award winner is
back to her tight-fitted ways next week.
Considering Justin Timberlake has made it on the best-dressed list a time or two, it wasn’t the biggest leap to envision the singer
and sometimes actor spreading his fashion aesthetic to the masses.
Collaborating with designer Trace Ayala, Timberlake broke out with his new clothing line, William Rast, in 2005. Known predominantly
for its premium denim, WR also produces “biker culture” tees, jackets, and hoodies for men and women and will be launching a limited
edition collection for Target in December.
Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen – The Row, Elizabeth & James
The famous TV twins who’ve spent most of their lives in front of the cameras are finding life behind them hardly threadbare.
First decimated and then later lauded for their unique and oversized gypsy-looking garbs, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have turned their
brand names into a fashion powerhouse, producing multiple designer lines—their high-end oeuvre allocated to their London-inspired The
Row and contemporary vintage-inspired Elizabeth & James.
This year the Olsen Twins entered the books of fashion royalty when they were given the coveted CFDA award for womenswear for The Row.
Nicole Richie – House of Harlow 1960, Winter Kate
My, my has Nicole Richie evolved. From Paris Hilton’s reality sidekick to controversially emaciated bobblehead to respected easy-
breezy boho fashion designer, Nicole has found a way to break the glass ceiling of reality superstardom.
Her ready-to-wear collections, House of Harlow 1960 and Winter Kate, have become celebrity favorites and helped her become a judge on
NBC’s reality fashion competition Fashion Star. Currently, Nicole is working on a collection for Macy's Impulse.
Before there was the exhaustive entity of “Kimye,” Kanye West was on his own and doing just fine at his day job, (albeit his
uncensored pie hole at awards shows is an entirely different story). Always restless and ambitious, however, the fashion-forward music
mogul decided to expand his celebrity by starting his own designer label, DW.
Launched in Paris in 2011, the DW womenswear collection—named after Kanye’s late mother Donda West who died in 2007—caters to
fashionistas with a sexy, dramatic flair with its mix of fur, leather, plunging necklines, and velvet get-ups. Sure sounds high
maintenance, which is right up Kanye's alley.

10 Awesome Innovations Changing the Future of Fashion
Textile production is dirty dirty dirty -- one of the dirtiest industries in the world in fact. Why? Partly because of the damage that
cotton crops and synthetic fiber production inflicts on the environment, and partly because of seriously outdated manufacturing methods
used to dye and finish fabric.
According to the United States Energy Administration, the textile industry in the U.S. is the 5th largest contributor to CO2 emissions
in the country.
But enough of the depressing stats: As consumers are becoming increasingly aware and clothing manufacturers are stepping up to more
environmental accountability, technology is taking off -- and there has been huge advances.
With New York Fashion Week strutting the catwalks September 6-13, it's a good time to take a closer look: From fabric out of food, beer
bottles and more to dying with air, and web sites that know your exact measurements, these 10 awesome technologies are changing fashion
as we know it.
Milk, tea and coffee tend to stick together...but not like this. As the high-tech sector is taking off in making fashion more
sustainable, other, more-humble, technologies are just as innovative -- and really, really cool. Case in point: Food products being
turned into wearable commodities.
German microbiology-student-turned-designer Anke Domaske uses milk to make a an "Eco Milk Fiber" called QMilch. High-tech sports
clothing company Virus uses recycled coffee beans for their Stay Warm line of cold-weather performance apparel. And the genius Suzanne
Lee, fashion designer and TED Senior Fellow, has been making fabric and vegetable leather out of...get this...the fermented tea,
kombucha. (Pictured above.)

New Names to Watch for Spring 2013 Fashion Week
New York Fashion Week is a strange combination of worshipping the big names while chasing after the new names. Here are a few designers to become acquainted with before their NYFW debut.
Marissa Webb
Jenna Lyons was the headliner in the great saga of J. Crew's turnaround from preppy stalwart to bastion of playful chic. But Marissa Webb was a supporting star. Formerly head womenswear designer for the brand, she left the Crew in 2011 to pursue her own eponymous line. Her NYFW debut will be on September 8. The Korean-born designer studied at FIT. From her website: "Her design aesthetic blends and juxtaposes elements of architecture and nature by mixing highly structured, tailored pieces with whimsical softness and flow." Sounds pretty J. Crew to me. Find some of her inspirations on her Pinterest.
Louise Goldin
This British export has been designing in London since 2008 but this season decided to bring her bright knitwear to New York. (Preen did defect across the pond this season, so we had to get something in return.) She collaborated on Kanye West's fashion line. It is rumored that Goldin fan Rihanna brought the two together. Goldin studied at Central Saint Martins and designed for Tereza Santos before going on her own. In her British Fashion Council profile she says her signature is "innovative programmed techniques where I create my own knitted fabric and textures, combined with structured, sculpted garments."
Tanya Taylor
Designer Tanya Taylor cut her teeth (and surely lots of fabric) as a designer at Elizabeth and James before starting her own collection last year. She studied at both Central Saint Martins and Parsons and is known for a subversion of classic pieces — a floral-print bomber jacket for instance. Her line is already carried by small boutiques around the world, but she is probably hoping a presence at New York Fashion Week gets her more high-profile distribution.
Katie Holmes and Jeanne Wang
It seems silly to include Katie Holmes in a list of new faces. But as familiar as her face is, it also seems strange to exclude her from a list of NYFW first timers to watch. Katie has been in the news constantly and will surely cause a commotion at NYFW with the first Holmes & Yang presentation. She is showing on September 9, up against pal Victoria Beckham who shows the same day. Believe it or not, the idea for the line came from the fact that these two didn't think there were enough expensive, luxurious basics on the market. Talk about a #firstworldproblem.
DIY Fashion: How to Make Knotted Hair Ties
Knotted hair ties are the new scrunchies this year. You’ve probably seen them on your favorite fashion blogger, in your favorite
store, or with the regular hair elastics at the drugstore.
Knotted hair ties are not only great for your hair since they don’t have damaging metal edges, but they can also be worn as bracelets
without being too tight on your wrist. In addition, they come in every style from neon to glitter. The downside is they run from about
$3 to $15 a pack… and we all know how quickly hair ties disappear.
This DIY will show you how to make your own knotted hair ties at a fraction of the cost – these are seriously the all-time easiest
hair accessories to make. Ready to get started? Read on!
What you’ll need:
Foldover elastic (I bought mine here.)
Ruler
Scissors
Ribbon (optional)
Needle & thread (optional)
1. Measure 8.5″ of elastic. You may want to cut a longer piece, depending on whether you want to wear your hair tie on your wrist and
how tight you want it to be. I found that this length fits best around my wrist. Cut the elastic at a slight angle to help with
fraying.
2. Wrap the elastic around your fingers to form a loop, then tie a knot. Leave about 1/4″ on the ends. Avoid pulling on the edges to
since this will make the ends fray. Make sure you don’t tie the knot in the middle or your hair tie will be too small
3. Make more! You can also dab Elmer’s glue on the edges so the elastic won’t fray, which will make them last longer and stay pretty.
4. Optional: Add a bow. Using a piece of ribbon, tie a bow, cutting the edges at an angle to prevent fraying. Make sure the ends are
even and the silky side is showing.
5. Sew the ribbon onto the elastic using a needle and thread. It doesn’t need to be neat – no one will be able to see the back. Just
try to avoid threading through the top of the bow. Knot the thread after about 3-5 stitches.
You can also make headbands with this elastic. Measure about 20″ of elastic. Again, you may have to adjust the length, but I found
this length worked for me. One way to get an accurate length is to measure the elastic against a headband that fits you well, and add 1
″ to that length (for tying the knot). Use the same method to tie the elastic as above and add glue to the edges to help prevent
fraying over time. These can be worn around the wrist doubled over.
This is seriously the easiest DIY project ever and is an amazing way to save some money on a trend. I bought about 11 yards of elastic
for $11, which will make me about 45 hair ties! You can make them as gifts, or tie the top of a gift with one to make a pretty and
usable gift topper. There are so many fun color choices, and they double as bracelets so you can always wear one on your wrist for hair
emergencies!
What do you think?
Will you be making this DIY? Do you love or hate this new wave of scrunchies? Have a fab DIY you want to see? Tell us in the comments!
